weekend in blacksburg - inn at virginia tech

When was the last time you ran away for a weekend? Maybe it’s time, again! A weekend in Blacksburg could give you some needed refreshment and a new perspective. Yes, long vacations are also necessary for family bonding and time away from the stresses of life, but weekend getaways can be just as effective for short-term revitalization!

Planning a Weekend in Blacksburg

Blacksburg offers everything you’ll need to enjoy a couple of days away from reality and to reconnect as a family. Here are a few ideas to spend a weekend away either alone, with your significant other, as a family, or even with a group of friends.

FRIDAY EVENING

Start your evening at The Cellar Restaurant and 6-Pak Store. Fill your belly with a Greek calzone, pizza, or sub, then head downstairs for a pint or two from one of the 24 rotating taps. If you can’t find just the right brew, the store next door has more than 600 craft beers from which to choose.

Next, relax with some culture at the Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech. World-class performers like composer Philip Glass, humorist David Sedaris, and ballet by The Dance Theater of Harlem are just a sampling of what you might enjoy. If there’s no performance scheduled for your evening, you can wander the trio of visual galleries that feature artworks from students to international artists.

SATURDAY

Begin your day at the Tee. The Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech is a par-72 course that’s as challenging as it is gorgeous. It winds along 2 ½ miles of the New River. One thing to know: If it’s football season, you’ll want to book your tee time well in advance.

Golf isn’t your thing? Maybe, it’s time for a bit of shopping. The Victorian-lamp-lined redbrick sidewalks in downtown Blacksburg serve as an invitation to visit the many shops, from clothing stores and art galleries to coffee shops. Since it’s Saturday, be sure to check out the Blacksburg Farmers Market while you’re there.

After you’ve had a chance to peruse the shops, a tour of Historic Smithfield is in order. Geek out on local history while you tour the home and outbuildings where Revolutionary War patriot William Preston laid his head, and at least two Virginia governors were born.

Sip away the rest of your day at the Beliveau Farm Winery. Enjoy their variety of reds and whites while enjoying the stunning setting on the outskirts of town. Then, walk the hiking trails, order a cheese plate, and settle in for a relaxing and enjoyable evening.

SUNDAY

The best way to spend a Sunday morning is at Preston’s for the best Sunday brunch in the New River Valley. Enjoy a frittata, carving station, pancakes, waffles, and other brunch favorites including The Inn’s signature bread pudding! Toast to your weekend with a mimosa or glass of champagne.

Hike to Cascade Falls for a moment of wonder and a breath of fresh air before heading back to your hectic but fulfilling life back home. Cascade Falls is a 66-foot waterfall that splashes into a rocky pool with chirping birds galore. It’s truly the perfect way to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul.
