Spring is ready to burst here in Virginia. As the sunshine awakens nature, it also beckons us outside with renewed energy and often a strong desire for adventure. Virginia is the perfect place to dust off your hiking boots, get some wear on the tread on your new bike tires, or get up close and personal with the rapids on the New River.
Don’t ignore the call to explore, instead grab your calendar and start planning a few adventures in Virginia!
Adventures in Virginia – What to Know
FUEL UP
Pack the car
Packing for adventure means you will likely need to pull together some gear before hitting the road. Be sure to grab proper clothing, shoes, and accessories you might need. Any time of year, layers are a good idea. Also, consider packing bike helmets, lifejackets, and any other safety gear you have, so you can be prepared for any adventure that comes your way!
Eat a hearty breakfast
Before you head out, fuel up. A breakfast that contains protein and ample carbs will keep you energized well into midday. Drink plenty of water for hydration, and you should be set.
Fill your pack
For any day-trip, your pack will be your best asset, but it must be filled with care. An overfull pack will be cumbersome and heavy. An insufficient pack won’t provide the necessary supplies you need for a fun and safe outing.
Include plenty of clothing, snacks, and a first-aid kit. You’ll also want water or water filter canisters to keep you going for the day. If you’re heading into the wilderness, a designated meet-up spot is a good idea so that you can check in with a loved one in case of an emergency.
Even if you use apps for mapping and locating trails, it’s a good idea to grab a map of the area. Remote locations often have spotty cell service or none at all.
At The Inn at Virginia Tech, we believe everyone needs a taste of adventure. Explore a new trail. Hit the rapids. Try something new. Whatever it takes to get your blood pumping and breathe in some much-needed fresh air. Our Adventure package includes a comfy room, breakfast, and a snack pack that includes food and water for your journey.
FORM A PLAN
If you prefer to have a plan, map out your trails and make your reservations ahead of time. With so many options, it can be nice to have your time planned rather than trying to make decisions while you’re traveling.
Alltrails is a hiking app that shows hiking trails near you. It has information on the intensity, length, and what you can expect to see. It also includes user reviews of the route. Four trails we highly recommend can be found here.
New River Junction is the place to be if you want to be near the water. Play in, on, or near the river with options like tubing, boating, and sunbathing.
Grab your straw hat and head to the farm to pick a fresh snack or make a new friend. From berries to alpacas to horse rescue, agriculture is alive and well in Virginia.
Are you feeling the need for speed? If you’re a thrill-seeker with a little time on your hands (some of these are a bit of a drive) how about ziplining, sky diving, or an ATV rental?
FLY BY THE SEAT OF YOUR PANTS
Leave the trip open for spontaneous fun. If you see something that piques your interest, do it! Sometimes the best memories are made when you stumble upon something fun and new to try.
